More information : A survey of 1541 refers to a strong bastle house at Hartington Hall (NZ02298807, OS 6" 1957). (1) The present Hartington Hall, with walls up to 1.6m thick, and internal features consistent with the specified date, appears to be a much-modernised bastle. See photograph. NZ 02298807. House, mainly of early 17th century date but with an earlier core, probably built in the 16th century. The 3 storey house is built of stone rubble with Welsh slate roofs and is L-shaped in plan. The roof and rear wing were altered in the mid 19th century. Recorded as a bastle in a survey of 1541. Listed Grade II. (3)
