Summary : Building - supposed church; stone axe
More information : (Area ; ST 9180 5720) (6) A field in Upper Ashton Field
(named separately on Tithe Map), Keevil, is known as Couple or
Coople Church Field (sited from Tithe Map) and is the traditional
site of a church which was said to have served two parishes. The name
occurs as Cople in 1630. The base of a cross now in Keevil churchyard
is said to have been dug up in this field. In March 1913 foundations
here were excavated by Lt W H Chamberlain. A rectangular building,
56' by 18' 6', orientated due E-W, with a transverse wall and buttress was found. Two skeletons were found on the south side and there is a tradition of a lead coffin having been found. Crawford refers to a ground flint axe having been found near the foundations in 1913 (3).

Coople Church Field now forms part of a MOD airfield. There are no
indications of the site of the chapel. (7)
