NZ 17030073. The remains of a stone gateway known as the Bargate, located to the west of Richmond Castle. The gateway dates to the 14th century, the first recorded reference being in 1313. The town wall ran around the western, northern and eastern sides of the town, the southern side being occupied by the castle. The Bargate stands in the south western sector of the defences. It measures 8 metres by 2.5 metres and is roughly 6 metres high with a 1.8 metre wide opening through the centre. Scheduled. (5) |
