Summary : Site of "Gilling Castle" the seat of Edwin,Earl of Mercia. The main period of occupation was over by the 12th century. The last traces were removed at the beginning of the 19th century. No visible remains.

"Gilling was the chief seat of Edwin Earl of Mercia, though the day ofits greatness was already over in the 12th c. This stronghold may
have stood on 'Castle Hill". (2)

Castle Hill, near the farmhouse of Low Scales, marks the site. The
last traces were removed at the beginning of the 19th century. (3)

The site falls in a pasture field, there are no visible remains.
