More information : (SU 14410831) St Mary's Church (NAT) (1) The church of Ellingham, described in charters as the church of St Mary or as the church All Saints with the chapel of St Mary, formed part of the grant to Ellingham Priory. (2) Ellingham Priory, a Benedictine house for priors and monks, founded in 1160 and dissolved 1414 was dependent on St Sauveur-la-Vicomte. (3) The Rev P MacDowall is sure that the priory buildings stood near the church; the chancel being the Priory chapel and the nave the Parish Church, but no foundations of the priory buildings have been encountered during grave digging. (4) No further information on the Priory. The church is in normal use. (see SU 10 NW 27) (5)
