Summary : Pottery production site comprising a kiln complex and associated buildings was excavated close to the entrance to Clarendon Palace between 1955-63. The site comprised eight Musty type 2a kilns which were constructed of marl. One of the buildings contained a post hole interpreted as a bearing for a potters wheel. Other excavated features included pits, some containing wasters, others were possibly cess pits. The pottery fabric contained ironstone and flint inclusions and was in forms including jugs, handmade, scratch marked cooking pots, dishes, curfews, skillets and money boxes. The kilns also produced a range of building products including ridge tiles, chimney pots and drainpipes. One of the kilns was archaeomagnetically dated to 1230-75, the others were in production between 1239-52. |
More information : (SU 16002979) A kiln was investigated by members of the Salisbury Museum Excavation Sub-Committee (1), during 1958/63 (2) under the direction of J W G Musty (1), on the Fielden's Housing Estate (see plan (2)). An area of 1 1/2 acres was examined revealing nine kilns of double stoke-pit type. Three buildings, including one discovered in 1955 were identified, together with eighteen pits, some of 12th century date and belonging to a pre-kiln phase. A large variety of 13th century pottery was found both in the kilns and pits, this all going to Salisbury Museum. (1,2) |
