Location :
Wiltshire
Durrington
Grid Ref : SU1247044370
Summary : A Neolithic long barrow, listed by Grinsell as Durrington 24. The barrow, surveyed in the 1980s by RCHME, is situated on the slopes of Durrington Down, among the buildings and grounds of Larkhill Camp. The mound is 45 metres long and 16 metres wide, and shows some damage from ploughing and military activity. The mound is orientated southeast-northwest, and only the flanking ditch on the north side remains visible. There is no record of an excavation. The barrow currently lies just outside the boundary of Stonehenge World Heritage Site.
More information : (SU 12474437) Long Barrow (AT) (1)

Durrington 24. A long barrow 142 ft long, 45 ft wide and
a maximum of 3 1/2 ft high, orientated SE/NW. In 1913 a ditch could
be seen on the NE. (2)

A long barrow 44 metres in length, 18 metres wide with a
maximum height of 1.1m. The mutilated remains of a shallow ditch can
be seen on the NE side.

The barrow lies within the bounds of Larkhill Camp and is preserved
by the Army.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

Originally recorded as Durrington 24 by Goddard. (4)

SU 125444, No. 80 (Kinnes). Durrington 24, long barrow orientated southeast. (5)

This long barrow is situated on the slopes of Durrington Down with good views to S and W, but restricted to the NE. It now lies among the buildings and grounds of Larkhill Camp. The mound oriented SE-NW, is 45m long and some 16m wide, but has been damaged by ploughing and military activity. A rectangular tump 11m long and 5m wide at the SE end may reflect the presence of an underlying structure. Of the flanking ditches only the N survives irregularly to c 0.2m deep. It would appear to have been about 8m wide. There is no record of any excavation.

Surveyed at 1:500 by RCHME field staff as part of the SPTA Project. See project archive for further details. (6)

The long barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (8)
