Winterbourne Stoke Crossroads Barrow Cemetery

Hob Uid: 219525
Location :
Wiltshire
Wiltshire
Wilsford Cum Lake, Winterbourne Stoke, Amesbury
Grid Ref : SU1018041770
Summary : The Winterbourne Stoke Crossroads round barrow cemetery comprises a linear arrangement of 19 late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age round barrows. Winterbourne Stoke 3 (Monument Number 870372) to 10 (870444) are aligned to the north-east of the Neolithic long barrow known as Winterbourne Stoke 1 (Monument Number 219696). They extend south-west / north-east for nearly 600m: this alignment continues after a gap of circa 100m (see Winterbourne Stoke 22 (Monument Number 219720)). A roughly parallel secondary alignment immediately to the west comprises Winterbourne Stoke 2a (Monument Number 866648) to 12 (Monument Number 870446). A cluster of barrows sits slightly apart, circa 250m north-west of the main alignment (Monument Number 215072). Most of the barrows were excavated by Sir Richard Colt Hoare in the early 19th century. The barrow cemetery was mapped from aerial photographs at a scale of 1:10,000 as part of the RCHME: Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP, which was revised by English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Mapping project. The barrow cemetery was surveyed at a scale of 1:1000 in August 2009 and January 2010 as part of English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. Please consult the individual round barrow records for further information.

A barrow cemetery of 17 barrows (Winterbourne Stoke 3-16a), comprising of nine bowl barrows, four bell barrows and two pond and disc barrows. Excavations by Colt Hoare revealed that all but five of the barrows; Winterbourne Stoke 3a (SU 14 SW 323), Winterbourne Stoke 7 (SU 14 SW 327), Winterbourne Stoke 7a (SU 14 SW 328), Winterbourne Stoke 12 (SU 14 SW 333) and Winterbourne Stoke 16 (SU 14 SW 337), contained burials. Burials were mostly cremations, often accompanied by grave goods. Two of the inhumations were found within coffins, Winterbourne Stoke 5 (SU 14 SW 325) contained an inhumation within an elm trunk and Winterbourne Stoke 9 (SU 14 SW 330) contained an inhumation within a boat-shaped wooden coffin. A cremation from Winterbourne Stoke 4 (SU 14 SW 324) was found within a wooden box. Five possible Anglo-Saxon burials were also recovered from Winterbourne Stoke 4.

Grave goods including daggers, beads, a whetstone, pin, awl and a necklace were noted within seven of the barrows; Winterbourne Stoke 4 and 5 (SU 14 SW 324, 325), Winterbourne Stoke 8 and 9 (SU 14 SW 329, 330), Winterbourne Stoke 13 and 14 (SU 14 SW 334 and 335), and Winterbourne Stoke 16a (SU 14 SW 338). (2-3)

All barrows have been measured and described. (4)

The CBA Implement Petrology Committee lists a fragment of a dolerite axe (Wilts no. 195), allegedly from this barrow group. Its precise provenance is unclear. (5) A Neolithic fabricator, now in Salisbury Museum (Acc. No. 197(b).1984) is thought to have come from this barrow group. (6)

The barrows are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, and have been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. Each is described in a separate record. (7)

The Winterbourne Stoke round barrow cemetery was surveyed at a scale of 1:1000 in August 2009 and January 2010 as part of English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project. Please consult the individual round barrow records for further information. (8)
