The now recumbent sarsen stone, known as the Cuckoo Stone, is located at SU 4166 4335. It's location was recorded in April 2011 using handheld GPS (with an accuracy of circa 1m) as part of English Heritage's Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project - Level 1 survey. Excavations in 2007 as part of the Stonehenge Riverside Project suggest that it was stood upright at some point before 2000BC, slightly west of its current location. It replaced a wooden pole that stood in a hole cut into the solution hollow that had formed naturally beneath the stone. The Cuckoo Stone has provided a focus for later pits and burials and a perhaps a Roman shrine. (5-6) |
