Swanborough Tump

Hob Uid: 221166
Location :
Wiltshire
Manningford
Grid Ref : SU1304060110
Summary : A low earthern mound, listed by Grinsell as a Bronze Age bowl barrow (Manningford 3). The mound has been identified with the "Swanabeorh" of a charter of 987 AD, the meeting place of Swanborough Hundred. The topographical position of the mound, on level ground, is felt to be untypical of a prehistoric barrow, implying that it may have been constructed as moot or meeting-place during the medieval period.
More information : (SU 13046011) Swanborough Tump (NR) (1)

Swanabeorh, mentioned in the Saxon charters of 987 AD. 'Barrow of
the peasants', v swan, beorh. The meeting place of the Swanborough
Hundred (2), it was said in 1884 that courts used to be held
there within the memory of an old man, who had died a few years
previously, (3). Listed by Grinsell under 'bowl barrows' as
Manningford 3; 18 paces x 3ft (4). (2-4)

Swanborough Tump (name verified) a low disturbed earthen mound
situated on level ground and overgrown with trees. Its
topographical position is not typical of a barrow and its
association Swanborough Hundred probably indicated a manorial
use. Published survey 25" revised. (5)
