Summary : Three Roman centurial stones and a fragment of an inscription are reported from Walbottle. All except one (No 1377), are in the Black Gate. R.I.B. 1373. (8 1/2" by 8 1/2"). Found in 1794 built into the wall of a stable. Reads: "C (enturial) p (rimi) p (ili)". No. 1376 (10" x 6" x6") Found in 1794 on the site of the south mound of the Vallum, a little east of Walbottle. Reads:- "C enturia Pere/Grini " whereas the provenance from the vallum is clear the stone, in thickness, resembles those from the wall. No 1377 Seen by Horsley built into a cow shed in Walbottle. Reproduction from Horsley reads:- "C (enturia) MUCI/EN now lost. No. 1378 (12" x 7 1/2") Found at Walbottle on, or before 1857. Reads:- "F) elix(.... " or "f) elix(....". The Greek name Helix (ILS. 2194) is most unlikely. The letter "F" was probably inscribed on the preceding stone - now missing. It either formed the proper name Felix, or expressed the good fortune of someone. |
