Monument Number 620454

Hob Uid: 620454
Location :
Doncaster
Tickhill
Grid Ref : SK6084392823
Summary : A double-ditched curvilinear enclosure, curvilinear enclosure and ditch of uncertain date are visible as a cropmarks and earthworks on air photographs.
More information : SK 608 928. Moorhouse Farm.
The buildings of the farm partly overlie a large kidney shaped enclosure, surrounded by two ditches described as a `marsh fort'. The area is 1.1 ha within the inner ditch. The site is on a slight hill formed by a tongue of sandy land which extends into the low ground near the river. (1)

A double-ditched curvilinear enclosure, curvilinear enclosure and ditch of uncertain date are visible as a cropmarks and earthworks on air photographs centred at SK 6086 9282.

The enclosure comprises two circuits of irregular curvilinear ditch. The cropmarks suggest that the inner curcuit of ditch was flanked on both sides by a broad bank. A small section of a third ditch is also visible.

Although only part of the circuit is mapped it appears likely that the present hedge lines fossilise at least part of the circuit of the outer ditch.

To the west at SK 6079 9285 lies a curved section of ditch which may represent an incomplete curvilinear enclosure.

This enclosure appears to have some similarities in its form and location with the enclosures ar Sutton Common (SE 51 SE 2/ UID 56097) so may be of similar date.
