More information : Chilworth Ring (OE) (SU 41351700). (1) Excavated by Miss D Liddle 1928. Nothing found. (2) Earthwork (TI). (3) Ancient Entrenchment (Centred at SU 41351700). (4) The camp lies on a level ridge of sand running nearly north and south. The shape is nearly circular with sides somewhat straightened to suit the ground. Rampart consists of a very uniform bank and ditch. The most original looking entrances are exactly along the line of the ridge just to the west of the north-east and southern corners and about 20 yards to the east of where the modern road mounts over the banks. Excavated by Miss Dorothy Liddall FSA (Scot). in Aug 1928. finds from cutting through the bank and ditch on the N side were: rough chisel shaped chert implements and ten flakes, two rough cores and a finely worked flint fragment. Four other cuttings provided neither finds not evidence. Full report with So'ton University. Class B. Hill-top Fortress.(7) A sub circular earthwork consisting of a bank and outer ditch, with two possible entrances, one in the NE; and another, now destroyed in the SE. The site occupies a poor defensive position, but is in a fair state of preservation, though tree covered. (8) A small univallate IA hillfort. It has been considerably mutilated by gardening in recent years and the ditch has been completely levelled on the north side. Published 1:1250 survey revised.
