Church Of St Mary

Summary : A Church, the original fabric of which dates mainly to the 14th century; it was restored in the 19th century. The church is constructed of squared stone with Lakeland slate and lead roofs. The plan of the church comprises an aisled nave, south porch, chancel, vestry and west tower, with a low timber steeple. The roofs of the nave and aisles are low pow-pitched, that of the chancel is high and very steeply pitched. The south aisle contains 14th century stained glass, including a depiction of the biblical theme of the "Tree of Jesse"; this window was restored in 1851. The font may be 13th century. Other featured include an 18th century memorial plaque or "cartouche" to Robert Fenwick, who died 1693, erected in 1717. The graveyard contains the gravestone and associated memorials to Emily Davison, a famous suffragette.

Mainly C14, restored C19. Nave of 5 bays, aisles, choir, tower
with low timber spire. One of the best parish churches in the
district and with important remains of mediaeval glass in East
window of choir. For full architectural details, see List Description. (2)

The Buildings of England volume for Northumberland contains a description of the church. Pevsner notes that the font is 13th century, and the porch is probably 16th century. The cartouche to Robert Fenwick was erected in 1717, although he died in 1693. (3)
