Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 364363

Hob Uid: 364363
Location :
Cambridgeshire
Huntingdonshire
Alwalton
Grid Ref : TL1328096130
Summary : Alleged site of a Roman building. Two inhumation burials were found in 1833 along with pottery, a samian cup and a coin.
More information : A villa existed in the parish of Alwalton south of the
Nene and east of "the castles". There seems no trace of it now. (1)

K Gibson talks of 'evident marks of a Roman fortifications'
just by the river, such as Roman bricks and 'remains of ramparts
opposite the mill there'. This may indicate a building,
especially as there is recorded an inhumation burial of a man and
woman, in 1833, with a samian cup, coin of Alexander Severus
and two bronze bangles. (2)

(Area centred TL 13289613). The area indicated is the only one
which could be described as "opposite the mill". Section "A"
consists of the garden and paddock of Mr Cook: Section "B" also
his property, is waste land with three permanent caravan sites
near the road. Part of it is used as a potato patch by caravan
dwellers. Perambulation of these two areas revealed no trace of
Roman tiles &c, though there is plenty of more recent brick
about. Mr Cook's gardener has never found anything unusual. The
ground between sections A & B & the river is marsh & water
meadow. Section C is occupied by farm buildings & was not
investigated: (d).

Mr Wyman Abbott has often tried to find this alleged building
without success (e). (3)

Local enquiries revealed that a 'few' Roman coins had been found
at approx TL 1337 9603. The finder is now dead and the present
location of the coins is unknown. No other evidence of Ro
occupation in the village has been recorded. (4)
