Summary : A round barrow situated on a bluff to the south of the River Tees at Piercebridge. The barrow has a flat topped earth and stone mound standing 1.8 metres high. It is round in shape and measures 22 metres in diameter. The mound was originally surrounded by a quarry ditch up to 3 metres wide, although this has been infilled over the years and is no longer visible as an earthwork. It has been suggested that this is a medieval motte or castle remains, rather than a barrow. Scheduled.
More information : [NZ 20881515 JHO] TUMULUS [OE] (1) Tumulus in CLIFFE PARK. (2) Barrow, diameter N-S 23.6m, E-W 24.6m. Ht. at E.side 2.4m., at W. side 0.5m. No ditch. Tree covered bowl barrow. (3) NZ 209 152. (Betty Watson's Hill round barrow), and round barrow 200yds (180m) to the SW. Scheduled No NY/611. (4) It has been suggested by a PastScape user that this is a medieval motte or castle remains, rather than a barrow and that the name should be Howe Hill though apparently this is a common name in the area.
