Monument Number 237494

Hob Uid: 237494
Location :
South Oxfordshire
South Moreton
Grid Ref : SU5624088330
Summary : Medieval moat seen as earthworks.
More information : [SU 5622 8828] Moat [G.T.] Manor House [T.I.] (1)

The Manor House of South Moreton, now a farmhouse appears to
date from the late 15th or early 16th century. It has a central
hall and two wings but has been much altered. A moat surrounds
the site. (2)

Irregular 2 storey block of ancient origin on moated site. The
north west block and part of the centre may be 13/14th century.

The north east end is a 15/16th century timber framed
construction. (3)

An incomplete dry moat of unusual shape with a causeway on the
east which develops into a holloway.

To the north of the moat, but connected to it is another dry
ditch, the purpose of which is obscure but which may have been
a fish pond.

Published survey (25") revised.

The house has been largely restored with the exception of the
north-east wing. See G.P. AO/63/247/8. (4)

The earthwork remains of a Medieval moat at SU 5624 8834 which forms
an irregular asymmetrical enclosure 85 x 130m. The site is masked
to the south-west by the incursion of the houses of South Moreton.
Attached to the north-western and north-eastern corners of the moat
are two short lengths of bank. No internal features were visible.
These features were mapped from good quality air photographs.

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
