More information : A Mesolithic flint-working site beneath the foundations of The Stables, at SU 55231747, (demolished in 1967) was excavated in 1968 by Miss Elizabeth Lewis of Portsmouth City Museum. Cores, core trimmings, flakes, gravers, borers, microliths, microburins, etc. were recovered, and are now at the museum. Excavations are now completed and the site is due for redevelopment in the near future. Surveyed at 1:2500. (1-3) The excavations in 1968 also revealed the remains of two late Saxon buildings, one large and square, the other an aisled hall, with fragments of 'Winchester' - ware of 10th-11th century date, latrines and rubbish - pits of the 11th to 14th centuries (when the site was unoccupied), and remains of a centre-post barn which stood by the 13th century mill-pond. (4-5) The site has been interpreted as a possible episcopal estate. (6) |
