More information : In 1204, Ralph Bluet was licensed to inclose a park at Silchester (a). An inquisition taken in 1348 mentions a park here (b). (1) Area : SU 648620 - Silchester Park lies to the south-east of the Roman town and would appear to have utilized part of the Outer Earthwork as the pale. The park is near-rectangular in plan and is situated on ground sloping gently down to the Silchester Brook. It falls between the 2-300 feet contours. The area contains a shallow, sheltered valley, with an ample water supply, in typical fashion. The pale is clearly traceable for most of its length, except where it has been probably destroyed in the area of the flood-plain of the Silchester Brook. (2) No change. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3)
