Brancepeth Castle, extensively reconstructed circa 1817, contains substantial portions of the original castle of the Nevilles, Earls of
Westmorland (1397-1584). The chapel was restored in mid-Victorian times in Gothic style, and the curtain wall surrounding the castle is partly Medieval and partly modern. Traces of a moat mentioned in the 16th century as dividing the courtyard into two parts, was seen in 1883. Hutchinson also describes a moat on the north and east side of the castle. Plans. Grade I.
