NZ 22393775 Chapel (NR) (1) Brancepeth Castle, extensively reconstructed circa 1817, contains substantial portions of the original castle of the Nevilles, Earls of Westmorland (1397-1584). The chapel was restored in mid-Victorian times in Gothic style, and the curtain wall surrounding the castle is partly Medieval and partly modern. Traces of a moat mentioned in the 16th century as dividing the courtyard into two parts, was seen in 1883. Hutchinson also describes a moat on the north and east side of the castle. Plans. Grade I. Brancepeth Castle, as described and in good condition. The sections of Medieval curtain walling contain embattling and machiolation, and are well preseved. There are no traces of the moats mentioned. Still in use and in good condition. (7) Published Survey (1:2500) Revised. (8)

According to the pedigree of the Bulmer family in `Early Yorkshire Charters II' Brancepeth had a castle between 1154 and circa 1177. (12) |
