More information : [SU 62438132] Elvendon Priory on Remains of [T.I.] Priory [G.T.] (1) Elvenden (or Elvendon)...... a small manor ...... marked on the ordnance map in Gothic letters 'Site of Priory', but there is no evidence of there ever having been a religious house there. It is not mentioned in the Valor Ecclesiasticus but the nuns [of Goring Priory] may have had a house of Retreat there. Ancient remains of some importance have been found from time to time and there is the reported existence of an underground passage to Goring Priory. Sometime in the 13th c. the manor was in the hands of the family of de Waleys or Wales. (2) Elvendon Priory, a large private residence, is a two-storey building of knapped flint with stone dressings: the roof is tiled. The central portion of the main block contains considerable evidence of early work, including thick walling (See GP/AO/60/157/2) and a number of original windows still in situ, one of three lights on the W. front being of 14th c. date. (see GP/AO/60/157/3). E. of the house, surrounding a rose garden, is a massive flint wall said by the owner to be contemporary. The remainder of the house is modern though constructed in similar style to the original: it contains stained glass windows commemorating prioresses of Goring Abbey with which the house is alleged to have some connection. The owner could offer no information regarding its history, but it would seem from auth. 4 and the surviving architectural detail that it represents the remains of a 14th c. manor-house. (3)
