Summary : Thirteenth century and later bishop's palace on the site of a 12th century bishops palace. Most of the buildings date to the 16th century, with an 18th century gothic villa. The private chapel was originally the great hall of the palace, it underwent 14th century alterations and was converted to a chapel circa 1660. |

Auckland Castle dates from the 13th century onwards although there has been a Bishop's palace on the site since the 12th century. The domestic part of the castle is an 18th century Gothic villa attached to an irregular group of mainly 16th century buildings. Gde 1.
St Peter's Chapel adjoining the castle was originally the Great Hall of Bishop Pudsey's palace (c 1190), altered in the 14th century and converted into a chapel in the 1660's. Gde 1. Auckland Castle is in good condition. The private Chapel (St Peter's) is still in use. (1-4)
