Hartley Wintney
Grid Ref : SU7819056380
Summary : Country house constructed 1859-62 on the site of a medieval manor house which was documented during the mid 16th century and was the home of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. The high Victorian Gothic house was designed by S S Teulon and was extended in 1901 and 1911. The house is built of red brick with stone dressings, bands and decoration in black brick. It has hipped and mansard roofs with gables and dormers. The whole design of the building is extremely varied and ornate. During the First World War the house was used as a hospital.
More information : (SU 78195638) Elvetham Hall on site of (T.I.) Elvetham
Hall (G.T.). (1)

A park at Elvetham is mentioned in 1359.(a) The house was visited by Henry VIII in 1535 and 1536 and by Elizabeth I in 1591. (2)

Rebuilt by Frederick, 4th Baron Calthorpe, (1851-1868). (3)

The old house was demolished many years ago and a very plain house built out of the old material. This is now being recast and added to. (4)

The present house is entirely 19th c. and later. It is known as Elvetham Hall and is now a training college and reception centre for I.C.I. Ltd. I know nothing of a possible depopulated village here. (5)

The house shows no signs of antiquity. No evidence of a depopulated village was seen. To the S of the house is a park demarcated by a fragmentary bank, the course of which, elsewhere, is indicated by modern field boundaries. (6)

Grade 2*. (7)

Elvetham Hall, listed grade II* (See Housing List for full description) (8)

HBMC Listed Garden Grade II (9)

A castle is recorded at Elvetham in 1305. (14)
