Summary : Supposed site of the Augustinian Priory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded 1180 AD, dissolved in 1196 when the lands were allocated to Finchale Priory. It was originally founded at Haswell, (NZ34SE10), but was soon moved to Baxterwood. |
More information : Augustinian Priory of the Blessed Virgin founded at Baxterwood (Bactanesford) by Henry Pudsey circa 1180, was abandoned in 1196 and the lands endowed to Finchale Priory (NZ 24 NE 1). Surtees stated that half a mile downstream from Aldin Grange were the evident vestiges of Henry Pudsey's foundation at Bactanesford. There is a local tradition of a priory at Baxterwood but no foundations have ever been ploughed up (a). At NZ 25564245 is some very hummocky ground in a meadow on the flood plain of the River Browney; an area one would normally expect to be flat. There are no foundations or walling and it is pure surmise that the site of the priory lies at this sheltered point. Nothing visible on APs. |
