Complete plan of the Palace of the Bishops of Salisbury at Sonning, revealed by excavations 1912-14 (C.E. Keyser and Sir Harold Brakespear (a)) and subsequently covered over again.
The house was moated on three sides and bounded by the River Thames on the north.
The earliest work dates from 13th C. with extensive alterations 14th-15th c. (2)
No surface remains of the Palace were visible at the time of investigation. The site is within an area of parkland. (3)
Seat of Bishopric in possession of the Bishops of Salisbury in the Saxon period, there being a residence there until several centuries after the Conquest. (4) |
