More information : The site of Reading Castle, said to have been demolished circa. 1153 appears to be lost, but may have stood on the high ground called Castle Hill [Name SU 709 729] west of the town (3) Lysons considered the site to have been the old county gaol in Castle Street, whereas Man mentions a ruin which stood on the site of the new county gaol near Blak's Bridge [SU 7215 7347]. (1-3) Castle Hill, by name and situation, is the most likely site, and Coates names a field at SU 70957286 ('A'). The Mount and in another at SU 70947293 ('B') notes 'Old Fortifications' No evidence was seen of the castle on the ground. (4)
