Lumley Castle is a late 14th century crenellated building of quadrangular form, with angle towers at each corner. The only important alterations were made circa 1580 and 1721. Now a residential hostel of Durham University. Grade 1. (2-3)
A Chapel mentioned 1432 within the Castle is situated in the north east tower on the floor immediately above the basement; now partitioned into two bedrooms. (4)

Listed as the site of a possible Roman signal station, indicated by the presence of Roman masonry. (6)

The strong paralleles between the design of Lumley Castle and the design of Raby, Bolton, and Brancepeth Castles suggests that they were all designed by a single architect, probably John Lewy. (10) |
