WS Bignor Roman villa, excavated in 1811, 1811-1818, 1925, 1956-1962, 1985-1988 and 1990 onwards. The site apparently consisted of a courtyard villa with an adjacent walled farmyard containing an aisled farmhouse. The site was occupied from c.AD 200 into the 5th century. The discovery of a relief-patterned tile may indicate the presence of a 1st-2nd century AD villa preceeding this site. A field system was found beneath the farmyard complex. (23) |
