Summary : The Irish Barracks at the Tower of London were constructed in 1669-1670 and were the first purpose designed soldiers lodgings. They occupied a position in the Mint against the curtain wall between the Salt and Broad Arrow Towers. It was two-storeyed with an attic and of timber-framed construction with a weather-boarded exterior. In 1752 the building was found to be in very poor condition and beyond repair. The building was therefore demolished and rebuilt on the same site. In 1804 it was extended 27m northwards to assist with the demand for space. It was finally demolished in 1878.
