More information : SU 948437 Site of Saxon church at Eashing. (1) Probable site of the Saxon burh of Escingum mentioned in the Burghal Hidage c.920. The site, centred at SU 948437, is situated on a promontory between two small valleys. (see plan (3)) There is a low but definite bank on the east, west and south sides. Parts of this bank are tree-covered and much spread. With its relatively undeveloped interior and its short term of occupation, perhaps only from 880 to 930AD the site might reveal a great deal of information about the nature of the late Anglo-Saxon town. (2, 3 & 4)
(SU 948437) Noted in list of possible Burghal Hideage Forts. (5)

SU944436 (sic). The estate at Eashing was bequeathed by Alfred to his nephew Ethelhelm. It is suggested that the Burghal Hidage assessment of 600 hides, supplying a length of wall of 2475 feet for the burh, excludes defences along the River Wey. The site is one of the few defendable sites in the area. (7) |
