Location :
Buckinghamshire
South Bucks
Stoke Poges
Grid Ref : SU9753082860
Summary : Manor house completed in 1555 on the site of an earlier house which was documented in 1331. The house was partly demolished in 1789.
More information : (SU 97538286) Manor House (NAT). (1)

The old manor house of Stoke Park which stood to the north of the church, was completed in 1555 (a) by the Earl of Huntingdon on the site of the house which had been crenellated by John de Moleyns under royal licence granted in 1331 (b). In 1789 the house was taken down, with the exception of the west wing which had its eastern elevation renewed at that time. The old deer park is now a golf course. (2)

Stoke Manor House, property of the Mobbs Memorial Trust (tablet) is as described above and is in good condition. A blocked stone window in the E wall bears the inscribed date 1555. Several brick chimneys and a few of the stone mullioned and transomed windows are originals, but the house has been considerably restored. The N elevation is Georgian, and there are modern dditions on all sides but the S. Not particularly outstanding. No trace remains of the part of the house taken down in 1789 nor of the pre-1555 building. (3)
