More information : (NZ 36730951) Moat (NR) (1)
"This looks like the remains of the signal station at the Tees terminal of the Roman road ....." (2)
A triangular enclosure the base of which is formed by steep natural slopes, and the other two arms by a strong ditch with the remains of a counterscarp bank. This has been destroyed on the SW side by ridge and furrow ploughing, which also covers the interior. The ditch, though shallow, has a `V-shaped' profile and a well-rounded angle. Published survey (25") revised. (3)
NZ 368095 Castle Hill. Moat, type A4, partly destroyed by the River Tees, but unlikely ever to have been moat on NE side. (4)
