Summary : The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Railway opened in 1865 from Picton, via Stokesley to Battersby, (opened 1857-58), and thence to Grosmont, (completed in 1865). The Western section between Picton and Battersby closed to passengers in 1954, although a freight service between Battersby and Stokesley continued until 1965. The remaining section of the route remains in use as a route from Whitby to Middlesbrough. |
