Summary : A Bronze Age round cairn on Hutton Moor. The cairn measures 12m in diameter and 0.7m high. Traces of a kerb are visible to the north and south edges. In the centre is a listed boundary stone. A smaller cairn stands immediately to the south and was recorded separately. The cairn was mapped from air photographs as part of the North York Moors NMP2, and is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography. Scheduled.
More information : [NZ 5963 1252] Tumulus [O.E.]. (1)

A revised survey (25" 1928) of this cairn has been made. It is
situated on the summit of Newton Moor and has a diameter of 14.0 m.
and an average height of 1.5 m. It is constructed of loose
sandstone rocks. The centre of the cairn has been badly mutilated and
the depression is now occupied by a boundary stone. (2)

0234 Newton Moor, Newton NZ 5963 1252

Sited on the same ridge on Newton Moor as 0125, 0126, and others,
this is a cairn constructed of small stones and measuring 9m in
diameter by 0.7m high. It has a large central excavation of 4.5m
diameter, which is now occupied by a boundary stone (see NZ 51 SE 64). This bears the
legend THR GA 4.

Ordnance Survey records, dated 1962, give the dimensions of this
mound as 14m diameter, 1.5m high; it now appears that these
dimensions were erroneous. (3)

NZ 596 125. Hutton Moor round cairns. Scheduled No CL/33. (4)

A Bronze Age round ciarn is visible as an earthwork on air photographs, centred at NZ 5962 1252. The cairn measures approximately 15m in diameter and has a central depression, suggesting previous excavation. The feature is extant on the latest 2009 vertical photography.
