(NZ 6079 0325) Burton Howe (NR). (3)

This tumulus, which had been previously robbed, was trenched by R
Close in 1956. The inner and outer of the three courses of kerb
stones are on edge. To the SW of the centre of the tumulus a cist,
4ft 6ins, was found on a 3ft deep clay floor. Other finds included: cremation, bones (fragmentary), bead and broken sherds of a possible urn. (4)

A heather covered barrow measuring 15.0 m in diameter and up to 1.7 m
high. The cist is no longer visible but parts of the kerb remain on
the SW. A boundary stone occupies the summit.

Surveyed at 1:10 000. (5)

NZ 6079 0325. Burton Howe round barrow.
The barrow has an earth and stone mound standing 1.7m high and 15m in diameter and was partly excavated by R S Close in 1956 when two phases of construction were found. At first the barrow mound was a turf stack surrounded by a circular kerb. In the centre was a cist in which the cremated burial was placed; fragments of cremated bone, pottery and a clay bead were found.
The mound was later reused and a second cremation was inserted on the south-east side and the mound enlarged with a covering of stone and earth. In the central area, below the capping of flat stones were four post holes, 0.3m square and 0.6m deep.
There was no surrounding ditch recorded. A boundary stone on top of the mound is 1m in height.
Scheduled (RSM) No 28230. (6)
