More information : NZ 72521566 Site of (NAT) Priory (NR) (cistercian founded 1133) (NAT) (1)

St Mary's Priory at Handale (or Grendale) was founded in 1133, probably for Benedictine nuns, but became a Cistercian nunnery before 1504. Dissolved in 1539. (2)

Sixteen skeletons, a stone coffin and a 5 ft sword were found on the site in 1830. The pedestal of a stone cross or font is preserved at the farmhouse and the stone coffin lid is now built into an outhouse. (3)

There are no visible remains of the priory apart from a dry fishpond at NZ 72521561 and a stone coffin-lid and pedestal at NZ 72511567. Several walls contain re-used stone, but none can be considered to be part of the original Priory buildings.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
