Summary : Twelfth century castle with 13th century additions including a gatehouse and late 16th century alterations, surrounded by double ditch. Dismantled in 1647. It is an irregular polygon in plan, and has been incorporated into a late 18th century planned landscape. The castle is visible as ruined buildings, structures, ruined structures and earthworks on air photographs. Additional holloway and possible remnants of building foundations are visible within the wall perimeter, immediately to the east and north of the keep. Probable remains of later planned landscape consisting of terraced ground are visible just outside the southern courting wall. The overgrown remains of Mulgrave Castle built in 1214 with later additions, and dismantled 1647 (see plan) is surrounded by two deep ditches. The castle consists of an irregular polygonal enclosure encircled by a curtain wall with towers at intervals. Near the centre of the enclosure is a square keep, formerly surrounded by other buildings; the foundations of which were partly excavated by "the present Marquess of Normanby" (pre 1923). The lower parts of the north and south walls of the keep and a portion of the curtain wall at the south west side may be contemporary with the erection of the castle. (2-3)
