Summary : The Waterloo Block at the Tower of London originated as barracks for approximately 1000 men. It was built in 1845 on the site of the Grand Storehouse by the Duke of Wellington acting in his capacity as Constable of the Tower and was named after his greatest battle. The building is in a castellated Gothic Revival style of limestone in three storeys. To honour the Duke a statue was erected in front of the building in 1863 but was subsequently removed to the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. The building was converted more recently into a museum and offices and currently houses the Crown Jewels.
