Turret 33b

Summary : The site of Roman turret 33B, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. It has been exposed and consolidated. The walls are 0.9 metres thick and have a maximum height of 1.1 metres. There is a blocked entry at the east end of the south wall. The turret apparently went out of use at the end of the 2nd century, when the pottery sequence comes to an end, and the doorway was blocked. It was subsequently demolished and the recess in the rear of the wall was blocked up.

Turret 33b, now scheduled, had formerly been of uniform construction, with narrow walls and door to east. (2-3)

The turret, though under grass, is outlined by slight traces of protruding stonework.
Resurveyed at 1/2500. (4)

The turret apparently went out of use at the end of the 2nd century, when the pottery sequence comes to an end, and the doorway was blocked. It was subsequently demolished and the recess in the rear of the wall was blocked up. Excavations. 1968-70. (5)

In the process of consolidation by D. of E. (I.A.M.) a legionary building inscription was found attesting work done by the 6th Legion. (6)

The masonry has now been consolidated by D. of E. and stands to a height of approximately 0.6m. (7)

The turret was located by Simpson in 1913 (8a). Full excavation report, plans, etc (8b). The turret at NY 8213 7054 is consolidated and under guardianship, it measures 3.95m east-west by 3.9m north-south (excluding the blocking to the north). The walls are 0.9m thick and have a maximum height of 1.1m. There is a blocked entry at the east end of the south wall. (8)
