More information : (SK 12230598) Offlow (Tumulus) (NR) (1) "..... At Swinfen, is all that remains of great Offa's burial mound. An arable field there is called Offlow (Offa's Low), and gives its name to an extensive Hundred of South Staffordshire. Repeated ploughings have all but defaced the mound." Offa died in 796 AD. (2) "Offlow, ... in all probability ... is not the burial place of Offa ... . According to the old writers, he was buried in a chapel near Bedford ..." Pape visited the site of Offlow at Easter 1934 and picked up a piece of Roman roofing tile there. The Rev E Deacon who was with him, suggested that Offlow might be a Roman barrow. (3) In 1938, Offlow was a low mound, 30 yards in diameter, and not more than about 2 feet high, but evidently much spread. It is so placed as to be in view of both Wall and probably Tamworth (4). This tumulus has now been demolished (5). (4-5) Ploughed down bowl barrow, 0.5m high, of indefinite out-line but roughly 30m in diameter. No visible ditch. (6) (SK 12230597) Tumulus (NR) (7) Now unrecognisable as a bowl barrow. Under pasture. Published survey (1:2500) revised. (8) The site was under the plough and there were no visible remains or surface finds. (9)
