More information : (SK 11163938) Roman Settlement (R). (1) In 1961 a limited excavation was undertaken in the NW corner of the new cemetery where a broad bank and probable ditch formed a corner. The section indicated a two period work, the rampart of a fort not earlier than AD 160, with an added wall not earlier than c 280. Immediately inside the defences were substantial timber buildings (2). There is definitely "a fort and larger walled area of some 8 acres. This seemed to me too large to have been a military site so I did postulate a walled town ..." (3). (2-3) Apart from the remains of a broad pasture-covered rampart at the NW corner of the fort, within the new cemetery, there are no surface remains to be found. The rampart, much reduced and spread by ploughing, is up to 15.0m in width, 0.7m in height internally, 1.3m externally. There are no traces of an outer ditch. (4) Visible on APs. (5) No change to report of Authority 4. Rampart surveyed on 1/2500 MSD. (6) Among finds from excavation in 1968 in the extramural area near the fort is part of the upper stone of a quern of millstone grit with an engraved phallus. (7)
