It a low circular bank with an inner and outer kerbing of upright stones. The bank, which is made of earth and small rounded stones, has a maximum width of 4m and survives to a height of up to 0.58 m. More information : [SK 2496 7679] STONE CIRCLE [O.E.] (1)

On Froggatt Edge, right above the Mason's Arms, on the E. side of the
drive which runs along the top of the moor, there is a stone circle,
about twelve yards in diameter(3), with a low rampart, which has
standing stones on each side of its bank and entrances N. and S.

A possible unfinished axe was found nearby in 1947 and is now in
Sheffield Museum. (2-4)

Scheduled (5)

Published survey (25") of circle correct. The possible implement is
not classified as an axe by Weston Park Museum and is probably
natural. (6)

List classifies the stone object as a possible hammer-stone. (7)

SK 2496 7679 (FCE) stone circle is terraced into a shelf above the
escarpment of Froggat Edge. The circle has an internal diameter of
c.10 m and an external diameter of between 18 m and 19 m. It
comprises two main structural elements, namely a low circular bank
with an inner and outer kerbing of upright stones. The bank, which is
made of earth and small rounded stones, has a maximum width of 4m
and survives to a height of up to 0.58 m. The circle apparently had
two entrances originally: one to the SW is flanked by four stones and
provides modern access to the circle, the other diagonally opposite
is marked by three stones but has been subsequently filled.

There is evidence of considerable degradation to this feature through
both previous excavation (scarps indicate a possible trench measuring
1.6 m by 2.4 m), and through erosion from various paths and tracks
across the site.

The above description is summarised from a detailed level 3 RCHME
1:1000 scale survey conducted in June 1987. The results of the survey
are held in the NMR archive. (1)
