More information : [SK 39559523] Ancient Earthwork [TI]. (1) A 'Hill-slope fort" with bank, ditch and counterscarp bank and an original entrance at the N.E. It is overlooked by higher ground on the NE, W. and S. Thomas lists this earthwork under "Iron Age" and postulates a 1st.C.BC- 1st.C. AD date, but also says that "some believe that the site is not prehistoric." Scheduled as "Caesars Camp." (2-3)
Re-surveyed at 1/2500. A well preserved, near oval earthwork, with a strong rampart, wide outer ditch but no counterscarp bank. It is non-defensively sited on gently sloping ground near the bottom of a valley, with a probable entrance on the NE, lower side. A map of 1778 (a) shows the earthwork in similar form, but calls it "Supposed Roman Intrenchment". See GPs 52/91/7-8 and 52/102/1. (4) Listed by Challis and Harding as an oval enclosure, of one acre, with strong rampart and ditch, sited on a hillslope (Iron Age). (5)
