The cave is obviously man-made. See photograph A0/66/8/5.
Published survey,1/2500,is correct. (3)

SK 439385. The Hermitage. Scheduled. (4)

A hermitage, in the form of a rock cut cave, located on the south side of Sow Brook, 170 metres south-east of All Saints Church. It is believed that the hermitage was created by a baker from Derby who had a vision which told him to go and live in Depedale (the old name for the village of Dale). There are 2 doors and 2 windows cut into the north wall of the cave, with the remains of at least 4 joist holes and creasings above them on the external face. This suggests that there was once a structure attached to the rock shelter on the north side. Scheduled. (5)
