More information : (SK 58 04) Ratae Coritanorum, Roman Leicester
The Roman town at Leicester (SK 58 04), was 'Ratae Coritanorum' (the accepted standardisation of various forms in Ptolemy, The Antonine Itinerary, The Ravenna Cosmography and on a milestone from Thurmaston). The area was first occupied by a primitive Belgic settlement, and evolved into a walled Romano-British town which was the administrative centre for the Coritani. There was big development in the late first century AD and the town survived into the fourth century, though it was probably then going into decay. (See map diagram and component cards). (1,2)
Leicester is in the process of being redesigned and much slum clearance and alteration is taking place, consequently many new archaeological and historical finds are being made. The museums hold many records and finds from the city. See further observations on the component cards.
Name 'RATAE CORITANORUM' accepted for 4th edition R.B. Map. (3) |
