Summary : Anglo-Saxon finds including pottery, swords, shield bosses, spearheads and a bridle bit found during construction work. The finds may indicate the site of an inhumation cemetery.
More information : "Birstall (SK 596103). Three Anglo-Saxon pots, two
decorated were found during the building of a new school. They did
not contain cremations ....... ." (1)

"A sword, shield boss, spear and two plain pots of Anglo Saxon date
were found here." (2)

Further to the previous discoveries on this site some animal bones
and horse's teeth were found in an area 4 ft x 4 ft. Among the bones
were the crushed remains of two shield bosses lying side by side and
below them an iron bridle bit (Leic Museum No 155 1958/9). (4)

Centred to SK 59551022 are 2 schools, Longslade and Stonehill, with
opening dates of 1961 and 1966. Neither holds any archaeological
material nor has knowledge of the site. (5)
