Summary : Country house constructed in 1580-88 to designs by Robert Smythson. Alterations were carried out after 1688 and in the 1830s Sir Jeffrey Wyattville remodelled the interior. It is one of the most important Elizabethan houses in England and has a symmetrical rectangular plan with an almost freestanding tower at each corner. Now a natural history museum.

Wollaton Hall, the most important Elizabethan house in
Nottinghamshire, and one of the most important in England. Built
1580-88 by Robert Smythson, it is basically rectangular in design
with all-round symmetry, having an almost free-standing tower at
each corner (see plan). It is of ashlar and has elaborate gables to
the towers, much strapwork and other ornament; the main part is
balustraded. Grade 1.(2-3)

Now in use as a Natural History Museum.
