Summary : Hermeston DMV (unlocated).Medieval/ post medieval banks and a platform are visible as earthworks on air photographs.
More information : Hermeston - SK 589884 - listed as an accepted Deserted Medieval Village. Nothing visible on available AP's (RAF 1948 & 1954). (1) Ground perambulation revealed no surface indications of desertion in the above indicated area. Mrs. Riddell (Hermeston Hall) has no knowledge of an early village and does not know the source of the name. To the south of Oldcotes Dyke broken ground indicates former quarrying. (2) Heremodestun: Heremods farm. (3) Mentioned in the Pipe Rolls in 1166. Medieval/ post medieval banks and a platform are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at SK 5896 8837. Possible remains of Hermeston deserted medieval village. Dispersed banks with no common alignment scattered over an area of approximately 20.9ha. Some appear to form enclosed areas. At SK 5894 8833 is visible a 14m wide platform. (4)
