Summary : The Jewel House at the Tower of London was designed and constructed by the Royal Engineers in 1842. Previously the royal regalia had had a series of locations around the Tower, on the south side of the White Tower and at the Martin Tower, for example. With the shift away from a military stronghold to a tourist attraction in the Victorian period the Tower needed a specific building to hold and display the Crown Jewels. The building adjoined the south side of the Martin Tower and was funded by the Royal Engineers with the idea that they would be reimbursed from future admission charges. The design had an elaborate crenellated entrance with flanking towers with its strong room located in a brick vault in the Outer Ward. Rooms for the Jewel Keeper and his family were included. Unfortunately, the design proved defective and was constantly damp. Less than ten years after it was opened the Lord Chamberlain ordered it to be demolished and the regalia was relocated to the Wakefield Tower.
