Hayton Castle

Hob Uid: 322968
Location :
Nottinghamshire
Bassetlaw
Hayton
Grid Ref : SK7398086720
Summary : Medieval moat, part of which was converted into a fishpond, no trace of any building on the central island although there is some evidence of disturbance, this site is believed to be the possible remains of Hayton Castle
More information : [SK 7400 8670] Lying just off the true course of the Roman Road is
what looks like a marching camp or early fort, situated at Hayton
Castle, between Clayworth and Wheatley. (1)

The remains of a homestead moat and adjacent fishpond, both now dry.
The North side is undetectable, in a field under crop, but the farmer
believes that, prior to filling-in, it followed the line of the
parish boundary. There is some disturbance of the central island, but
no definite evidence of a building.

Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)

Claimed to be site of Hayton Castle of the family of de Hayton.
No remains extant except part of the moat which was converted into a
fishpond. (The modern house called "Hayton Castle" is said to be
about 300 yds from the ancient site and if the moated site is the
true one the distance should be 500 metres). (3)

No change. (4)

(SK 73988672) Moat (NR). (5)

SK 7397 8672l. Hayton Castle moated site and fishpond. Scheduled
RSM no. 23218. (6)
